If you are newly eligible for Medicare, you are entering into an important and sometimes overwhelming period in your life. Many people who become Medicare eligible will want to purchase a Medicare Supplement plan. Medicare Supplement insurance fills in the gaps where original Medicare leaves off. Plans are standardized by plan letter such as F, G or N. By being new to Medicare such as by turning 65 or taking Part B for the first time, you are entering a 6 month window where you can choose a Supplement plan with no health questions or pre-existing conditions. Generally, that is the easiest and best time to pick up your health insurance plans. Here are some key things to know about Medicare supplement insurance:
Supplement plans work alongside original Medicare and allow users to doctor anywhere in the US. There are no networks with Medicare and supplemental insurance.
By choosing a plan when you are first eligible for Medicare or within 6 months of activating Medicare Part B, you do not have to answer health questions to purchase a supplement plan.
Medicare generally covers about 80% of medical bills, and a supplement plan helps to cover all or some of the 20% depending on the plan you choose.
Medicare Supplement plans have standardized coverage. Many insurance companies sell supplement plans like BCBS, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, Medico, Humana, UnitedHealthcare® and more. Because plans are standardized the coverage offered by each company is identical, oftentimes the only difference between companies is their price. Already have a Medicare Supplement Plan?
If you are over 65 and have been on the same supplement plan for years, you have likely faced some rate increases. You never have to change your supplement plan, but we recommend all Medicare Supplement buyers check their supplement rates at least every 3-5 years. Oftentimes we can find the same supplement plan and coverage but for a lower cost by answering some simple health questions and being healthy enough to be accepted.
